Wired.com has an article up titled "Toy Designer Reveals Rejected Star Wars Products" that is a must read. Here's a brief snippet :
"In 1998, self-described "biggest Star Wars nerd around" Jason Geyer was assigned to design promo products for Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.
Because the company he worked for, Raving Toy Maniac, wasn't an approved LucasFilm vendor, Geyer and his colleagues had no idea what the prequels would look like (or what type of creatures would be included). They used the original trilogy as inspiration, and LucasFilm went through the designs to tell them what would and wouldn't work for the new films."
